A device for fastening a roll 11 to the frame 1 of a paper machine includes fastening members 32 which project from a lower wall 63 of the frame and have end formations 33. The members 32 are displaced towards the roll to allow the formations 33 to be engaged into grooves 30 formed in roll bearing housings 12 or, as shown, in fastening bases 13 fitted thereon. The members 32 are then retracted to pull the roll against the frame wall 63. As shown a hydraulic cylinder 40 acts against springs 34 to extend members 32. Further drive means can be provided to move the roll transversely of the wall 63. <IMAGE>
