In an assay method for detecting an analyte in a sample, which method comprises the step of detecting the binding of antibody to a conjugate between one or more haptens and a conjugate partner, each hapten residue of the conjugate carries a net charge. A reagent kit comprises (i) either such a hapten conjugate or a hapten capable of carrying a net charge, and (ii) an antibody directed to the hapten.
