Refractory compositions, and process for their preparation

The novel refractory compositions have controlled stress- and/or crack-induced zones (CSCIZs) whose composition comprises the same starting material or one or more components essentially present in the starting material. The CSCIZs are obtained by addition of specifically sized grains to the starting material. This does not change the chemical properties of the base material, but achieves an excellent TWB of the refractory compositions. All the advantageous properties of the starting material, such as, for example, its chemical resistance or its high refractoriness, are fully utilised in the novel refractory compositions.
