A seat (10) for supporting a passenger in a vehicle includes a seat base having first (18) and second (20) sections. The first (18) and second (20) sections are coupled to the vehicle such that, upon a sudden acceleration of the vehicle, at least a portion of the acceleration being directed from forward to rearward relative to the orientation of the passenger, the first section (18) of the seat base (10) moves away from a rest position and the second section (20) moves away from a rest position along a second predetermined path, so that as the first (18) and second (20) sections move away from their respective rest positions, the distance between a point on the first section (18) and a point on the second section (20) changes and at least a portion of the second section (20) is raised relative to a portion of the first section (18).
