A process for heating a plastic pipe exiting an extruder is such that (i) the pipe outer surface is contacted with heating devices comprising solid material; and (ii) the pipe is fed via two revolving heating wheels, having external parallel grooves, so that it is heated on at least one side contacting the grooves, wherein the novelty comprises that inert heating gas is fed into one of the heating devices and the closed space surrounding the pipe to produce a heated protective gas atmosphere from the inside of the heating devices.
