Method and system for accessing a computer via a telephone handset

The system for remotely accessing a computer has access means for accessing a plurality of interactive audio communications (audio dialogues), voice means for producing audio messages which are transmitted by the computer to the telephone handset, and entry means for selecting one of the interactive audio communications via the telephone handset. The interactive audio communications permit access to voice mail, electronic mail, a file manager (documents, databases, etc.) and facsimiles which are stored in the computer. Once inside an interactive audio communication, the system makes available a series of instructions which allow the user to process the information stored in the computer. For example, the system may allow the user to listen to a message which has been received via electronic mail, and then to reply to the message. Furthermore, the system may enable the user to listen to the text of a document remotely and then to transmit the document by facsimile to a location (station) remote from the computer.
