<p>PURPOSE:To eliminate such a defect that picture elements of a display device do not illuminate and to obtain a display more attractive by applying an effective voltage which satisfies a specific expression between an insulating substrate where an entire- surface transparent electrode and a nonlinear element are arranged and the transparent electrode. CONSTITUTION:Picture elements where the nonlinear element 5 has no wire breaking are applied with a voltage corresponding to the difference between a voltage applied from a signal electrode 4 to a picture element electrode 6 through the element 5 and the voltage of a counter electrode 7. If the element 5 has wire breaking, the voltage obtained by subtracting a voltage applied to a entire-surface transparent insulating film 10 from the difference Veff between the voltage of the entire-surface transparent electrode 9 and the voltage of the electrode 7 is applied. Liquid crystal is only placed in a black turn-off state so that picture element corresponding to the breaking of wire are not seen as a turn-off detect.
