Control handoff method in a cellular telecommunications system

The cellular communications system includes CDMA and diversity combining with control handoff. The system has a number of mobile switching stations (MSC) connected to each other and the PSTN. These stations are connected via base stations (BS) to a mobile station (MS). An MS (30) is normally linked to the PSTN via a BS (24) an MSC (14). When the MS detects a valid pilot signal from another BS (22) it signals its MSC which establishes a diversity link (82,72,50) via another MSC (12). When the signal becomes too weak the first base station relinquishes control.
