Oxidation of 3-9c cycloalkanes to 3-9c alk-anedioic acids

The oxidation is effected with a mixture of ozone and 100-115% nitric acid at -60 to 100 degrees C, pref. 5-70 degrees C, using a mole ratio of cycloalkane to HNO3 of between 10:1 and 1:10 and a mole ratio of HNO3 to ozone of between 100:1 and 1:1. The process may be batch or continuous. In examples adipic and glutaric acid are obtained from cyclohexane. The products are useful in the preparation of polyamides.
