The subject of the invention is a process for welding at least two metal workpieces (1, 2), in which process the metal workpieces (1, 2) are brought into contact at their edges to be welded in order to form a joint plane (3) and the said workpieces (1, 2) are held in position, characterised in that, at the joint plane of the metal workpieces (1, 2), a discontinuous weld is produced by spots (20) of deep penetration and, over the entire length of the said joint plane (3), a continuous, non-emerging and hermetic weld (seam) (21) is produced. The process according to the invention applies to the welding, using a laser beam, of at least two metal workpieces like, for example, bare or coated metal sheets or tubes. <IMAGE>
