In order to assist an antilock and/or traction control of a motor vehicle by means of a brake system, it is proposed according to the invention to adjust the power output of the reciprocating piston internal combustion engine driving the motor vehicle to a suitable value by adjusting the valve timings through relative rotation of the camshafts.
