A guillotine machine for cutting sheets from a web of tacky or like material provided with a backing strip comprises a pair of rollers 7, 8 for stripping the backing strip from the web as it is fed through the machine, and means 11, 12 and 27, 28 adapted to operate in synchronism in order to hold and feed the web through the guillotine, when open, to a predetermined point in the path of travel of the web. The stripping rollers 7, 8 are rotatably mounted on an arm 9 so that the roller 7 contacts the periphery of a roll 1 of material, thereby driving both rollers. The web-feeding means comprises a pair of rollers 11, 12 drivingly coupled by gears 13, 14, the roller 11 being driven by means of a rack 16 via a gear 15 and a one-way clutch connected therewith. The rack is connected to a block 31 which is fastened to a sleeve 33 slidable on a stationary shaft 34, the sleeve being driven by means of a pneumatic or hydraulic piston. The shaft is supported in block (36, Fig. 1) which is adjustable along the bed of the machine. The block 31 also supports one end of a bar 29 which is connected at its other end to a slidable rod 30, the bar carrying a pair of gripper jaws 27, 28. The guillotine includes a pair of blades 20, 21, the blade 21 being mounted on a bar which is movable vertically on bars 23, 24; the cutting edges of the blades are urged together by springs (21<SP>1</SP>, 2111, Fig. 3). In operation, the jaws are actuated pneumatically to grip the end of the web and the sleeve 33 then moved by its actuating piston so that gripper pulls the web and the rollers 11, 12, driven by the rack, tend to push the web. At the end of a stroke determined by the setting of the shaft 34, the blades are pneumatically actuated to cut the web and a switch 39, 41 actuated to cause the rack to be returned.</p> |
