Hydroxy-functional polyurethane resins which are organic solvent-soluble comprise the non- gelled reaction product of (1) a polyethylenically unsaturated hydroxy functional polyester; (2) an organic diisocyanate in an amount of 0À1 to 20% by weight based on the weight of the resin and (3) a lipophilic monoethylenically unsaturated monomer containing a terminal hydrocarbon chain of at least 4 carbon atoms in an amount of 1 to 25% by weight based on the completed resin, the balance of the resin consisting essentially of the polyester resin which provides excess hydroxy functionality beyond that required for complete reaction with the isocyanate functionality provided by the diisocyanate. Suitably the polyester is first reacted with the diisocyanate and in a second step the copolymerization reaction is carried out with the lipophilic monomer. The polyester is preferably prepared from hydroxy-functional materials at least 25% by weight of which contain at least 3 OH groups. The diisocyanate is preferably an aliphatic diisocyanate and particularly is an aliphatic ester dissocyanate. Suitable lipophilic monomers are stearyl acrylate, lauryl acrylate, butyl methacrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, dibutyl maleate and dibutyl fumarate. The resulting OH group containing polyurethane interpolymers may be cured by reaction with organic solvent-soluble aminoplasts.</p> |
