The optical interface device includes an interconnect substrate having a number of electrical traces and a light emitting device with a working portion. The light emitting device is mounted on the interconnected substrate to operably connect the light emitting device to one of the number of electrical traces, and a first optical portion has a first surface, a second surface, and a tapered surface extending between them. The first surface of the first optical portion overlies a portion of the interconnect substrate. The second surface of the first optical portion is positioned in overlying relationship to the working surface and parallel to and spaced with distance ranging from 2.0 millimetres to 200.0 millimetres from the working portion of the LED. The tapered surface extends from the second surface toward the working portion of the LED for guiding light emitted from the working portion of the LED to the first surface.
