PURPOSE:To automatically detect a surface defect such as an oxidized film generated in a metal pipe of extrusion material or the like and properly remove the defect. CONSTITUTION:A device comprises a defect detecting part 9 for inspecting a metal pipe 1 for whether its surface defect is there or not over the total periphery and length, defect removing part 11 for removing the surface defect, defect position detecting part 8 for detecting a defect position and a control part 10 for obtaining a position and depth where a metal pipe surface must be removed to control the defect removing part. In the control part 10, a defect depth, obtained on the basis of a relation of a prepared defect signal detected by the defect detecting part 9 to the defect depth, is synchronized with the defect position obtained from the defect position detecting part 8, to control the position and depth removed by the defect removing part 11, and the defect is removed. |
