PURPOSE:To obtain a controlling device of an air conditioner which has the simplest construction needing only the minimum number of operating keys and can realize a common use by combination with the same remote control device, irrespective of the kinds of indoor and outdoor machines. CONSTITUTION:An outdoor machine function code showing the type of an outdoor machine is transmitted from an outdoor machine control device 1 to an indoor machine control device 2, and an operating function code for a remote control device generated from the outdoor machine function code and an indoor machine function code showing the type of the indoor machine concerned is sent out to the remote control device 3. In the remote control device 3, an operating input means 31 and a display means 32 are switched over for this air conditioner in accordance with this operating function code, while a control item is changed over and inputted with this operating input means 31 operated and an operating command is determined on the basis of it and transmitted to the indoor machine control device 2. In the indoor machine control device 2, an indoor machine operation control signal and an outdoor machine operation control signal are sent out to the indoor machine and the outdoor machine in accordance with the operating command.
