PURPOSE:To produce a boron nitride coated carbon material excellent in adhesion to a carbon material and thermal shock resistance. CONSTITUTION:A boron nitride coating film is formed on the surface of a carbon material by conversion in a nitrogen-contg. atmosphere to produce a boron nitride coated carbon material and a thick boron nitride coating film is further stuck on the boron nitride coating film by a method other than conversion.
