PURPOSE:To provide the novel compound useful as a heat--sensitive recording material outstandingly improving the stability of recorded parts therewith to light, plasticizers, water, heat oil, etc., also excellent in the preservability of color-undeveloped parts. CONSTITUTION:The nonhydrin derivative of formula I [X is of formula II or III (R<1>-R<4> are each H, 1-4C alkyl, alkoxyl, aryl or acyl; where, when R<1> is H, R<2> is not methyl; when R<3> is H, R<4> is not methyl)], e.g., 2-hydroxy-2-(1- methyl-2-methylindolyl-3)indane-1,3-dione. The compound of the formula I can be obtained by reaction under reflux between ninhydrin and a compound of formula IV or V in an alcoholic solvent. |
