[Also in Division B3] A gearing mechanism for a machine for grinding cutters comprises first 33 and second 77 primary gear means, first 73, 74 and second 75, 76 pairs of intermediate gears meshing respectively with the first and second primary gear means, rigid connecting means 121 non- rotatably connecting one intermediate gear 73 of the first pair of intermediate gears to one intermediate gear 75 of the second pair of intermediate gears, and a torsion bar 125 the opposite ends 125a, 125b of which are connected respectively to the other intermediate gears 74, 76. The gearing mechanism prevents backlash between the first primary gear in the form of a rack 72 on the rod 33 and the second primary gear 77 connected by the indexing device 85 to the spindle 71. Rack 72 is engaged by the first pair of intermediate gears 73, 74 and the second primary gear 77 is engaged by the second pair of intermediate gears 75, 76. Gears 73 and 75 are joined by the rigid connecting means in the form of a sleeve 121 which is rotatable on a second sleeve 118 to which is keyed at 117 the intermediate gear 76 and which has a splined connection to one end 125a of the torsion bar 125. The second sleeve is rotatable in a bearing in the housing 91 of the headstock 17 and in a bearing 119 in a third sleeve 114 which has a splined connection to the other end 125b of the torsion rod and is joined to the intermediate gear 74. The torsion bar is pre-loaded by disengaging the gear 77 from the gears 75, 76, locking the rod 33 against movement, and applying a load 4 to sleeve 118 by means of an arm having pins engaging holes 128 in the sleeve. In a modification, the second primary gear means consists of a pair of gears which engage the first pair of intermediate gears having helical teeth and one of the gears is axially adjustable along a spline to vary the loading of the torsion bar.
