A roller for heat treatment of fabrics &c., comprises two end plates 2, 3 to which are fixed two coaxial cylinders 8, 10 welded to rings 7 to define an annular chamber containing a thermal fluid which is heated by the combustion gases from a gas or oil burner 6 burning in a refractory steel fire chamber 15 inside a diffusing shell 17 which, together with the wall of chamber 15 and the radially inner wall of cylinder 10, defines an S-shaped flow path for the combustion gases ensuring equal heating of the roller over its whole length. The annular chamber between cylinders 8 and 10 is provided with perforated helical blades 14, and the exhaust combustion gases pass out of the roller at 5.
