N-pyridinesulfonyl-N'-pyrimidinyl- and -triazinyl-ureas of formula I <IMAGE> (I) wherein R1 is hydrogen or fluorine; or R1 together with R3 is a C2-C4alkylene chain; R3 is hydrogen, fluorine or C1-C3alkyl; R2 is hydrogen, fluorine or C1-C3alkyl; R4 is hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine or C1-C3alkyl; R5 is hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, C1-C3alkyl, or C1-C3alkyl substituted by fluorine or chlorine; Ra is hydrogen or halogen, or a C1-C4alkyl, C1-C4alkoxy or C1-C4alkylthio radical each of which may be unsubstituted or mono- or poly-substituted by halogen; Rb is hydrogen or a C1-C4alkyl radical; X is C1-C3alkyl, C1-C3alkyl mono- to tri-substituted by halogen, C1-C3alkoxy, or C1-C3alkoxy mono- to tri-substituted by halogen; Y is halogen, C1-C3alkyl, C1-C3alkyl mono- to tri-substituted by halogen, C1-C3alkoxy, or C1-C3alkoxy mono- to tri-substituted by halogen, or is cyclopropyl, methylamino or dimethylamino; and E is nitrogen or the methine group, and the salts of those compounds, with the proviso that at least one of the radicals R1 to R5 is fluorine, or one of the radicals R4 and R5 is chlorine, have good selective-herbicidal properties. The preparation of those compounds and their use as herbicidal active ingredients is described.
