PURPOSE:To efficiently obtain high-grade TiC whiskers through a solid phase reaction process by using carbon black having specified properties of particles as a carbonaceous material in a starting material blend. CONSTITUTION:A Ti source is blended with a carbonaceous material and a formation catalyst selected from among chlorides of Fe, Ni and Co, an alkali metal chloride as a powdering inhibitor is further added if necessary and TiC whiskers are formed by passing the resulting mixture through a solid phase reaction process in which it is brought into a reaction under heating in an inert atmosphere. At this time, carbon black having >=80m<2>/g nitrogen adsorption specific surface area (N2SA) and >=120ml/100g DBP oil absorption is used as the carbonaceous material. The amt. of the carbonaceous material used is about 50-200 pts.wt. per 100 pts.wt. of the Ti source, that of the catalyst is about 1-30 pts.wt. and that of the powdering inhibitor is about 10-100 pts.wt.. |
