SILOXANE-POLYARYLENE POLYETHER COPOLYMERS

A polysiloxane-polyarylene ether comprises (A) at least one siloxane chain of at least two units RbSiO 4-b wherein R is a monovalent, sub- 2 stituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon group or a divalent organic group which links the siloxane chain to a polyarylene ether chain via a C-Si bond, at least one group R per siloxane chain being said divalent linking group, and b is 1, 2 or 3, and (B) at least one polyether chain having recurring units -O-E-O-E1- wherein E is a residue of a dihydric phenol and E1 is a residue of a benzenoid compound carrying an inert electron-withdrawing group o or p to the valence bonds of sigma* value above + 0.7, and the oxygen atoms are attached to aromatic carbon atoms. The siloxane-polyether linking groups may be formed by various reactions listed, including reaction of polysiloxanes having Si-H groups with polyethers having unsaturated groups and reactions of polysiloxanes having various reactive groups on hydrocarbon groups with the corresponding polyether compounds. Suitable dihydric phenols and activating substituents for the benzenoid compound are also listed. In examples excess bisphenol A is condensed with 4 :41-dichlorodiphenyl sulphone and the product polyether is converted into the sodium phenate and condensed with bis-bromomethyl-di or poly dimethylsiloxano or (in Examples 4 and 10) reacted with allyl chloride then with a hydrogenterminated polydimethylsiloxane; in variants (Examples 5, 6 and 7) the bisphenol is diphenylol sulphone or the bisphenol from benzophenone or vinyl cyclohexene, or (Example 8) hydroquinone is condensed with 4 -.41-difluorobenzophenone to give the polyether.
