A quantity, such as speed, temperature, pressure or horsepower is maintained at a fixed value by a system having an oil pump K, a reset sleeve 16 provided with a piston 15, a selector spool 36 and a metering spool 24 operable within the sleeve and interposed between a diaphragm 37 and a compression spring 35 provided with adjusting means 27, a variable metering notch 25 in the metering spool 24 providing communication between a bore 14 and the bore 20 of the sleeve 16, first and second lands 41, 42 on the selector spool 36, a pressure cavity 52 connected to a fluid supply means and provided with a fixed orifice 52a in communication with an annular cavity 23, a bore 54 in communication with the cavity 23 and connected to the discharge side of the fluid supply means, a port 21 in the sleeve 16 to provide communication between the cavity 23 and the bore 14, a relief valve 58 between the cavity 52 and the bore 14, a drain conduit 50 between the bore 14 and a sump I, a fluid passage 55 inter-connecting the pressure cavity 52 and a pressure annulus 36a between the first and second lands 41, 42, afluid passage 48 connectable between the pressure annulus 36a and the chamber at one side of the piston 15, and a fluid passage 47 connectable between the pressure annulus 36a and the chamber at the other side of the piston, a drain passage 49 connecting the drain conduit 50 and the left end area of a bore 17 and a signal transmitting means B inter-connected with respect to the selector spool 36 and a controlled quantity in the system. In the preferred embodiment, a centrifugal pump K is driven through a slipping clutch F controlled by a piston H subjected to the pressure in conduit 54, the pressure cavity 52 being supplied by an oil pump D. When the pressure in the pump delivery line A varies from the fixed value, the diaphragm 37 displaces the metering spool 24 to vary the bypass flow into the conduit 50 and thus adjust the slip in the clutch F. The selector spool is also displaced by the diaphragm to cause the piston 15 and sleeve 16 to increase the rate of opening or closing of the metering notches 25. Adjustable needle valves may be provided in the passages 47 and 48 to enable the response time to be regulated.</p>
