PURPOSE:To provide a negative electrode for a nonaqueous electrolyte lithium secondary battery thus has high volume bulk density, large discharge capacity, particularly high initial charge/discharge efficiency, and an excellent repetitive charge/discharge characteristic. CONSTITUTION:A carbon material used as a negative electrode is provided with the following properties. Methophase pitch group carbon fiber milled is used, in which an average value of smaller ones of intersection angles between fiber cross section and fiber axes is 75 degrees or larger. The methophase pitch group carbon fiber milled is used of which an aspect ratio (a ratio of length to a diameter in carbon fiber) is between 1-20 and a coefficient of variation of a fiber diameter is between 10%-50%. Total quantity of elements other than carbon contained in the fiber is not more than 5000ppm. |
