In the apparatus disclosed in the Parent Application in which the connecting means on a drilling pipe string of a drilling assembly incorporates a disconnectable connection e.g. an electromagnetic clutch, and a 'contact at maximum' connection, the latter is an adder - subtractor of the type which holds an electric contact closed when it is at zero and opens this when it contains an integer other than zero.
