摘要 PURPOSE:To realize high-grade continuous gradation display free from flickers by making the layer orientation in the chiral smectic C phase of ferroelectric liquid crystals into C2 uniform orientation. CONSTITUTION:Orientation control layers are formed on at least one substrate of a pair of substrates and at least one of a pair of the substrates are subjected to a rubbing treatment. The layer orientation in the chiral smectic C phase of the ferroelectric liquid crystals is the C2 uniform (C2U) orientation. Voltages of different polarities are applied to the ferroelectric liquid crystals by each of pixels corresponding to scanning electrode groups or signal electrode groups of the first frame of the two continuous display frames having the pixels including the ferroelectric liquid crystals driven by a prescribed number of the scanning electrode groups and the signal electrode groups and voltages of the polarities reverse from the polarities of the first frame are applied to the pixels in the second frame. Namely, the ratio of the transmitted light intensity at the time of applied the positive voltage and at the time of applying the negative voltage is smaller in the CPU orientation than in the C1 uniform (C1U) orientation.
