MIXTURES OF ISOMERIC PENTANOIC ACIDS, ESTERS PREPARED FROM THEM AND THEIR USE AS LUBRICANTS

Mixtures of isomeric pentanoic acids are prepared by hydroformylation of 1-butene/2-butene mixtures to give aldehyde mixtures, and oxidation of the aldehyde mixtures which have been separated off. The hydroformylation is carried out in the presence of rhodium catalysts, which are dissolved in water. The mixture of isomeric C5-mono-carboxylic acids, when esterified with dihydric or polyhydric alcohols, gives a mixture of isomeric esters which are used as lubricant for refrigerant compressors operated with chlorine-free, partly fluorinated hydrocarbons as the refrigerant.
