[Also in Division C2] In a process for extracting human calcitonin, defatted medula carcinoma of the thyroid gland or C-cell metastasis material is first purified with alcohol a dilute trichloracetic acid then treated one or more times with a solvent system containing water and a 1-5C-alkanol, especially a system containing HOAc and BuOH, at pH 1-6 and subjecting the extract to gel chromatography using formic acid as eluant. The extract is further separated by countercurrent distribution into HT-C 1 , HT-C 2 , HT-C 11 and HT-C 21 components. The component HT-C 21 is of unknown constitution. HT-C 2 and H-T-C 11 are dotriacontapepticles of known constitution and HT-C 1 is a dimer of HT-C 2 (see C2).
