Ceramic composite based on silicon carbide and aluminium nitride and process for its manufacture

The ceramic composite is obtained by mixing silicon carbide and aluminium nitride in the form of powders and by heating and by compressing or sintering the powders together to form a ceramic composite containing solid solution. The ceramic composite can include separate AlN and SiC phases or it may consist of a solid solution of SiC and of AlN, or else it may contain one or more residual AlN and SiC phases in a solid solution matrix of SiC and of AlN. The ceramic composite according to the present invention is usable in armouring, cutting tools, nozzles and other components subjected to impacts or to a considerable abrasive action.
