Apparatus for carrying out mass transfer between a medium stream and a packed bed which, to receive the packed bed, has a base containing orifices. To protect the base from deposits, at least some of the orifices are arranged so that the medium jets exiting therefrom sweep out over the base surface. Preferably, the base is composed of surface elements which in pairs make an angle opening upwards of no more than 90 DEG and in their lower region contain orifices whose medium jets each clean the other surface element. The orifices are preferably considerably larger than the particles.
