A wiper shaft in a vehicle engine compartment can be opened and closed by a protective plate, by means of a device, it being possible to displace the protective plate along a guide rail under the surface of the bonnet. The associated displacing drive comprises a spring which forms the opening drive and during the closing movement of the protective plate is pretensioned by means of a closing drive, whereas the closing drive can be disengaged in its action from the protective plate during the opening movement.
