The invention relates to a sensor material for detecting ammonia. It is an object of the invention to provide a sensor material by means of which, without cross-sensitivities to other harmful gases, ammonia can be quantitatively measured with the aid of an optical sensor. This object is achieved by a complex of tetraphenylporphyrin and metal ions as receptor for the gas components to be detected and nitrocellulose as immobilising matrix for this receptor.
