In a control device for a hydraulic brake system for a motor vehicle, in which the outlet pressure fed to the wheel brake cylinders of the hydraulic brake system can be regulated by way of a control valve, connected to a hydraulic pressure source and actuated by an electronic control device, a brake pedal actuation switch is provided, which at the start of brake pedal actuation, delivers an output signal to the electronic control device, whereupon the said device, by way of the control valve, raises the outlet pressure fed to the wheel brake cylinders of the hydraulic brake system to a predetermined value more rapidly than is possible solely by actuation of the brake pedal, owing to the clearance between the brake shoes or linings and the associated brake drums or discs.
