The inventions relate to a laterally activated device for axially displacing the lead in a lead pencil. The lead is thereby moved from a retracted position to a writing position. To this end, a transverse bar (20) is arranged on the lateral clip (10) which extends approximately in the axis (100) of the lead. The transverse bar (20) is longitudinally displaceable in an inclined transverse channel (2) above the lead (3). It has a recess (21; 21a, 21b, 21c) into which there protrudes a locking point (31; 31a, 31b) which tapers in a wedge formation and which is mounted rotatably in the writing utensil (1). This point forms one end of a push-type shift element (30), while the other end, below the axis of pivoting (30c) of the push-type shift element (30), bears indirectly (3a) or directly on the lead (3) of the writing utensil (1). With this mechanism, lateral displacement of the transverse bar (20) results in the lead moving from the retracted position into the writing position, and vice versa. A connection between clip activation and movement of the lead is thus created, so that the writing utensil can be pushed into a jacket pocket without any risk of dirtying the jacket, because activation of the clip as a rule precedes the insertion manoeuvre. <IMAGE>
