A rotary vane engine (10) has a housing (11) and a rotor (14) eccentrically mounted inside the housing (11) on a shaft (15). Vanes (42) are located in circumferential slots (50) provided on the outer circumference of the rotor (14) and co-operate with the housing (11) internal wall (13) and a guide groove (51) provided in the housing (11). The vanes (42) are arcuate in shape and their leading portions define a part of the combustion chamber (57) together with the housing (11). Outer and inner vane braces (43, 44) respectively pivotally couple the vanes (42) to the rotor (14). An exhaust outlet (40), air inlet (55), fuel inlet (54) and spark plug (56) are also provided in the housing (11).
