The invention relates to an electric heating element for foil welding devices having as heating conductor a thick-film conductor track on a ceramic basic body, the temperature or heating power of which heating conductor is to be easy to vary in its longitudinal direction in accordance with its task, while having a simple design, and which at the same time also has a low thermal inertia. According to the invention, this object is achieved by a variation in the width and/or thickness of the thick-film conductor track and, if necessary, by the variation in the thickness of a thermally and electrically insulating layer, which is not necessarily continuous, below the thick-film conductor track.
