The multi-cellular, wireless telephone system has a communications system (KS) to which terrestrial base stations (BS) are connected, high-precision communications system clocks (kst) being formed in the communications system (KS). The transmission signals (ui) transmitted via a terrestrial path to the base stations (BS) are synchronised with these communications system clocks or transmission clocks (kst). In the base stations (BS), the transmission clock (ut) is extracted from the received transmission signals (ui) and a synchronisable system clock generator (BTG) is synchronised. With the aid of the method according to the invention, high-precision system clock generators (BTG) can be implemented at low circuit cost in base stations (BS). <IMAGE>
