A deformable shape-retaining moist animal food composition, which may be non-hermetically packed without sterilization and stood for long periods without refrigeration, comprises a pasteurised matrix of proteinaceous materials normally capable of supporting bacterial growth, and uniformly distributed throughout said matrix an aqueous solution including sugar and/or polyhydric alcohols in bacteriostatic amount, the moisture content of the composition being 15-40 wt per cent, there being additionally present a hydrophilic colloid selected from the polymer class of carbohydrates and/or polypeplides in amount of 5-50% by weight of the sugars and/or polyhydric alcohols, the major proportion of the matrix being in a substantially hydrated condition. The matrix may be meat, which terms includes poultry and fish, and/or vegetable. An antimycotic may additionally be present. |
