In a delay device for delaying an optical signal, the signal path is formed with a wavelength conversion device and a wavelength-selective delay line. The wavelength of the optical signal emitted by the wavelength conversion device is variable. The delay time of the optical signal is controlled in steps as a function of the respective wavelength. A first use relates to an arrangement for changing the sequence of serially transmitted blocks of data, the arrangement acting as time stage for an exchange apparatus (switching system). A second use relates to the synchronisation of a plurality of optical signals at the inputs of an exchange apparatus.
