1379979 Sheet forming J LOUSTAU 8 Feb 1972 [10 Feb 1971 4 May 1971] 5704/72 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions B3 and C1] Apparatus for constructing a honeycomb structure comprises lines 1, 1<SP>1</SP> ... of fixed abutments 2 and lines of movable abutments 4 between which extend component elements 7, 8 of the structure, the abutments 4 being moved so as to deform the elements into touching corrugations, the elements then being connected together to form the honeycomb. The elements, which may be tubes or strips, may be woven bands of crimped glass threads, parallel glass threads embedded in thermoplastic or thermosetting material, plastics, asbestos, linen, cork, cotton, iron or aluminium, and may be fastened together by adhesive, welding, polymerization, catalysis, weaving, or riveting. Heating means may be embodied in the fixed and/or movable abutments. The abutments 4 may be moved simultaneously, if the material 7, 8 can readily slide around the abutments, or may be moved column by column (e.g. columns I, II... in Fig. 5). Fig. 3 shows expanded one arrangement in which each column of movable abutments is mounted on a slider 9, the abutments extending through slots 12 in a plate 10 mounting the fixed abutments. The strips 7, 8 overlie a further apertured plate 11 which is raised after the strips are secured at 16 to remove the honeycomb from the abutments. In another form, the plate 10 and slider 9 are identical superposed ladder-like formations, an abutment forming each "rung", The co-operating faces 5, 6 of the abutments may be indented in complementary fashion. |
