PRODUCTION OF HIGHLY WATER-ABSORBING FIBROUS RESIN

PURPOSE:To obtain a highly water-absorbing fibrous resin having excellent water- absorbency by melt-spinning a specific water-soluble polymer compound obtained by the reaction of specific components and irradiating the spun fiber with ionizing radiations. CONSTITUTION:This highly water-absorbing fibrous resin having improved strength is produced by preparing a polyoxyalkylene glycol by the addition polymerization of alkylene oxides containing >=70 wt.% of ethylene oxide to an organic compound having two active hydrogen atoms, reacting at least one of dicarboxylic acid compound and diisocyanate compound to the glycol to obtain a water-soluble polymer compound composed of the recurring unit of the formula I [A is unit consisting of the recurring units of the formula II and the formula III (R<1> is hydrocarbon group); the amount of the unit of formula II is >=70wt.% and the recurring number of the unit is positive number; the recurring number of the unit of the formula III is 0 or positive number; X is organic compound residue having two active hydrogen atoms; R2 is dicarboxylic acid compound residue or diisocyanate compound residue], melt-spinning the obtained polymer compound, irradiating the spun product with ionizing radiations to effect the cross-linking of the polymer and drawing and weaving the cross-linked fiber.
