<p>PURPOSE: To obtain an oxidizable reactant-oxygen mixture without any risk of ignition and explosion by specifying the properties of inactive packing materials and the oxidation conditions when mixing the oxidizable reactant with an oxidant in the packed bed of the inactive packing materials. CONSTITUTION: When the oxidizable reactant such as ammonia is to be oxidized by the oxidant, they are mixed in the packed bed 7 of the inactive packing materials such as ceramics and pebbles, whose maximum diameter, in the case of spherical particles, is made to satisfy DP<=0.61Dt VSD/VLB-0.727 Dt (wherein DP is a diameter of the inactive spherical packing material, in inch; VSD is a designed surface velocity at the inlet, in ft/sec; VLB is a layered combustion rate of the mixture, in ft/sec; and Dt is a diameter of the packed bed, in inch) and whose maximum side length, in the case of non-spherical particles, is made to satisfy DP=6VP/SP (wherein VP is a volume of the non- spherical inactive packing material; and SP is a surface area of the non- spherical inactive packing material).</p> |
