Hydrocarbons, pref. kerosine, benzine, butane and/or propane, are passed, as vapours or as finely-divided suspensions, through Fe-contg material heated to >=800 degrees C in non-oxidative atmos. until >=25 wt % carburisation is achieved, followed by cooling of carburised Fe prodn. useful as reducing agent in prodn. of Fe sponge and Fe powder in sinter metallurgy, in the non-oxidative atmos. Used of liquid hydrocarbons enables use of lower carburising temps. and results in higher reduction power of prod.
