A mountaineer's piolet includes a metal head (12) acting as a support for a peen (pane) (18) and for an anchoring pointed tip (pike) (22), a metal shaft (16) in the form of a hollow tube in which an end piece (14) of the head (12) is sleeve-fitted, and a point (44) fastened to the end of the shaft (16) opposite the head (12). To improve the feel (holding) behaviour of the piolet (10) in the hand, the terminal part (40) of the shaft (16) has a narrowed transverse section permitting the overmoulding of an anatomical gripping handle (38) which includes a curved face (43) located substantially in axial alignment with the upper part of the shaft (16). <IMAGE>
