At least one peripheral portion of the edge (thin side) of the head of a key comprises an appendage (3) formed during the operation of cutting the key. The appendage (3) has dimensions and a thickness which are smaller than the dimensions and thickness of the head (1) of an uncut key and is coated with a coating (6) corresponding to the peripheral portion of the cut head. The distinctive element constituted by the coating involves no increase in the thickness of the key and requires no additional machining. <IMAGE>
