Heat storage block, esp. for transferring heat from hot impure boiler waste gas to the same gas which has been purified by a wet process is assembled from shaped elements made of thermoplastic polyphenylene oxides or material contg. these, esp. copolymers with polystyrene. The elements are flat plates made by extrusion and intermediate spacer bars made by infection moulding. The assembly is built up, e.g. in layers, by ultrasonic welding. The welds are linear seams between broken rows of pointed ribs or spot welds between circular ribs formed on broadened sections of the spacers. A rotary exchanger can be divided into framed sectors holding suitably cut blocks. Blocks are economically made from material having little affinity to the gas components and easily cleaned, and with high creep resistance under alternating stress.
