Known positioning methods and apparatuses position plane cloth blanks, without securing in position, according to three coordinates by means of air cushions and stops, with adjustment according to size and material, or by means of displaceable depositing plates and actuating drives which are complicated to control, are sluggish and tend to require build up. The new solutions execute, without adjusting work, independently of size an orientation of a blank edge taking place successively in three coordinates and method steps, friction grippers and a vacuum serving for securing the blank piece in position. The essence of the invention according to Figure 1 is that the blank piece (17) deposited on a positioning plate with a suction device is fixed in position alternately by means of suction air and friction grippers and, as a result of movement by means of actuating drives in the x, y and phi directions, is moved relative to the punctiform photosensors (1 and 2), fixed to the frame, in three movement steps as far as the sensor (1), is rotated about the latter as far as the sensor (2) and is displaced parallel to the x axis by means of the clip (19) as far as the sensor (1). The sector of use is the automatic processing of blank pieces in the textile industry. <IMAGE>
