A three-point safety belt system for a motor vehicle having an automatic belt retractor for the safety belt, a belt lock and a belt tightening device which, when a critical change in speed is exceeded, tightens the belt which, in order to alleviate the spring return force formed in the automatic belt retractor when the safety belt is on, provides a controlled counter torque for the winding shaft of the automatic belt retractor, the belt tightening device engaging on the belt lock to cause the belt to be tightened.
