A buttonhole sewing machine has a needle-thread cutting and clamping device (27), of which the lateral movement transverse to the feed direction (V) of a sewing-material slide frame (1), on the one hand, and of which the opening operation, on the other hand, are controlled by a cam mechanism (18). The cam mechanism (18) contains a specific cam (13, 15) for each of these two functions.
